A Novel
from Calcutta
The Teak Almirah is a
poignant novel about identity and belonging. It invokes
the Calcutta of the past, when it was a city of grace
and charm.
The novel revolves around two Jewish persons with a Calcutta
connection, visiting the city in search of their roots,
and their interaction with an ageing lady burdened with
a sad secret.
"A moving, heartfelt and
exciting journey of the soul, beginning in far corners
of the world and culminating in Kolkata"
Chitra
Divakaruni, author of Before We Visit the Goddess and
Palace of Illusions
About the Author
Jael Silliman, born and raised in
Calcutta, wrote her first novel, The Man with Many Hats,
after a long career in academics at the US. She is the
author of several scholarly books and papers, including
Jewish Portraits: Women's Narratives from a Diaspora of
Hope.
She herself is Jewish, part of a merchant community,
once 4,000 strong, that moved from Baghdad to Calcutta
over two hundred years ago, but now reduced to only a
handful of people. Jael is an ardent chronicler of that
waning community, running the archival website
